Do you want to decorate your interior in a rustic style? Take advantage of our hints – we have chosen matching furniture and accessories.
Holidays spent in the countryside leave unique memories in your mind. Even if we’ve never experienced them – they’re sure to be associated with adventurous carefreeness. When arranging interiors, we are eager to introduce accents that are supposed to remind us, among other things, of our favourite places – so why not evoke the atmosphere of that special time in the interior design? And if we do not have such memories, the rustic style will surely make us feel as if we are getting them.
Rustic style – what is it?
Our grandparents’ houses, especially those situated in the countryside, have rarely survived to this day in an unchanged form. Over the years they have undergone further renovations, which most often also included the replacement of interior furnishings so that the original country cottages are so few today. However, we gladly draw on this old-style in interior design, calling it the rustic style.
How to arrange a house in a rustic style
Rustic style features:
natural materials – old or stylized wood furniture, maybe bleached, wiped or leached; stone or wooden flooring
simple decorations – dishes made of clay or metal, wooden figurines, wrought-iron details; it is also worth trying to get objects with a soul, such as an old iron, a cuckoo clock, a paraffin lamp or a sewing machine
colours – light, natural colours that will blend nicely with wood – sapwood, écru, beige, brown is also acceptable
fabrics – wool, linen, cotton
Folk accents – not necessary, but always welcome – openwork napkins, wall-mounted paper napkins and textiles with folk patterns.
How to arrange your living room in a rustic style
The living room should be an oasis of peace that will soothe the nerves after a busy day. The rustic style will work perfectly here – it will help to create a warm, cosy interior with a touch of sentiment to the past. The raw beauty of natural materials will bring a specific kind of elegance to the arrangement, even if time has left its mark on them.
How to arrange your living room in a rustic style? Such an interior should be free of glitter and fancy decorations. Soft, comfortable lounge furniture should be accompanied by solid wood furniture. Tables and tables can be covered with linen tablecloths or openwork napkins made on the crochet hook. It is worth taking care of the flowers – but if you like to cut in vases, let them be field flowers rather than elegant rose bouquets. The aforementioned accessories are suitable even if you have a flat in a block of flats rather than a stylish house. DIY enthusiasts may even be tempted to make a table based on some extremely popular sewing machine.
The style of a country cottage is interestingly referred to as brick walls – if you don’t have one in your flat, you can lay brick imitation tiles – white or red in colour. What about the floor? Wooden planks with visible imperfections on the surface would be ideal. There may also be stone tiles (or imitation stone) on which we will lay soft carpets (e.g. eco-leather or artificial fur). Luminaires in such an interior should be made of metal – forged chandeliers or hanging lamps resembling bird cages, on the walls wall lamps with small textile lampshades, standing lamps which will create a pleasant atmosphere in the evening. Let’s not forget about candles – on large, wooden or metal chandeliers.
WARNING: You can even have the characteristic wooden beams under the ceiling of a country cottage in a block of flats (provided that the interior is large and the height of the room is at least 2.8 m). The so-called rustic beams are available on the market, which is illusionary similar to wooden beams, even though they are made of plastic.
How to furnish your kitchen in a rustic style
The kitchen should be the heart of every house – in a house decorated in a rustic style this heart seems to beat even harder. Furniture should be the basis here – if not entirely made of wood then at least with wooden fronts. In addition, there should be a matching colour top made of stone or wood, and above that, cabinets hanging in the form of display cases. If there is enough space, you can make an exposition with the dishes we use most often – beautifully decorated ceramics will look good on open shelves (several plates can be placed vertically). Cups are hung on metal hooks on the wall under these shelves.
The provincial rustic style is a reference to nature – also in the form of herbs. We can keep them alive in pots (place them on the windowsill or in another, sunny place) or dry them in bunches hung above the kitchen island (away from cooking fumes). If we don’t have a place on the island, let’s try to have a table with chairs (or an extended worktop where you can sit down) – spending a lot of time in the kitchen it’s good to be able to sit down.
Spices and various kitchen trinkets are stored in plaited baskets. Cast iron pots and copper pans will additionally emphasize the style of the arrangement.
How to arrange your dining room in a rustic style
The dining area is, of course, wood, which is rustic in style and is changed by all means. It may even be a small table, but the ideal solution would be a bench and benches lined with artificial fur or soft, flat cushions for convenience. In addition, a daily linen tablecloth and a crochet napkin (can be combined with each other) are also available for Christmas. Clay vessels with a floral pattern, a bouquet of field flowers, a bowl with fresh fruit, which can also be treated as a decoration – and the dining room arrangement ready. The chairs do not have to be the same – each can be different as if we wanted to create a composition from furniture inherited from different ancestors.
How to arrange a bedroom in a rustic style
Warm and cosy – but how? The wood itself makes an interior more “homely” and comfortable, but it’s textiles that will give the bedroom the desired character. Let’s not limit ourselves to the number of cushions – the more cushions they provide, the more comfortable they will be. Apart from bedding, the bed should also have soft blankets, which we can use to warm up during cold nights.
In the morning it will be nice to put your feet on a fluffy rug – put one on each side of the bed (a large carpet in the bedroom is not needed). If we cover the windows with roller blinds for the night, we will decorate them anyway with heavily wrinkled curtains in neutral colours – a cosy interior can’t do without them. Let’s put bedside lamps with linen lampshades on the bedside tables, whose function can be fulfilled even by ordinary, wooden stools. Additional blankets or pillows can be kept in a large basket in a corner of the room – or in a wooden box.
On the wall above the bed, let’s hang a middle – but in a traditional form, and not a graphic designer with an animal motif that has been promoted for several seasons. Instead of a wardrobe to the size we usually have in our bedrooms, let’s look for an old piece of furniture in shops or at a trade fair with antiques. Or perhaps someone in the family would have such a wardrobe to give away?
How do you arrange your bathroom in a rustic style?
A bathroom from the former village is a topic that should be treated quite loosely because the toilet in its former form is not right today. The stone floor, free-standing bathtub (metal would be ideal), a wooden window for towels and accessories – baskets for small items, wrought-iron lighting fixtures (paraffin lamp by the mirror?) will help to maintain its rustic character. The sink should resemble a bowl – DIY enthusiasts may even try to adapt a real metal bowl as a sink.
Let’s also try to find a place for decorative textiles – the cabinet under the sink may have embroidered curtains instead of fronts, the glass in the entrance door may be covered with wrinkled top and bottom fabric, and lace envelopes may be placed on the window (apart from the Roman roller blind).
