Rustic kitchen: which furniture, colours, materials and rustic accessories to choose?

Rustic style is one of the most popular interior design ideas. Its character brings to mind a cottage in the countryside, away from the hustle and bustle of the city, but close to nature. There is no rule about where it can be used – the rural style can be used in single-family houses and block of flats. It is most authentic in the countryside and old houses. One of the rooms that most often use this kind of arrangement is the kitchen.

Rustic style: characteristic elements

There are some elements that define the rustic style from the beginning. The kitchen will be decorated according to its assumptions, so it will be full of wood. Various furniture handles and parts of kitchen equipment can also be made of metal. In the rural style, it is also about making everything look older than it really is, because it gives the interior the right atmosphere, which makes the arrangement very personal.

A rustic-style kitchen makes a lot of use of what nature has given us. The interior can therefore turn out to be quite raw, although elements such as bouquets of dried flowers or wicker baskets bring a bit of warmth to it.  It is important to keep it simple. There is also no need to avoid imperfections – the boards used to create furniture or lining walls and floors can have irregularities, knots and cracks.

Rustic style kitchen: furniture

A rustic kitchen must be equipped with suitable furniture. They are usually made of raw wood. A country-style kitchen can be furnished with ready-made rustic furniture, which is available in many different shops. However, it is also worth thinking about ageing furniture. For example, you can look around for old furniture that someone wants to give away and give it a second life. Rural style kitchen furniture can therefore be re-painted or painted and wiped to create an interesting effect.

Depending on what you like, you can opt for whitewashed furniture that uses light colours such as mint or cream or thinks of raw boards in natural colour. Rustic kitchen furniture includes a sideboard that can be painted white or grey and heavily wiped with sandpaper. For the kitchen, you can also choose a heavy wardrobe and a table made of raw wood.

Rustic style kitchen: colours

The rustic kitchen is a characteristic colour tone. The colours here are borrowed directly from nature. And so often we have here snowy white, wood colour, bleached lavender, beige, sage and blues. Of course, there are also dark rustic kitchens. Arrangements of this kind make up for the inner warmth and cosiness. In this case, the colour of wood prevails, as well as different shades of green. It is also possible to successfully combine old wood with the delicate, light colour of walls or walls (in many cases the walls are lined with fine bricks in white or sand colour). 

Rustic style kitchen: materials

First of all, this type of interior is dominated by wood. It would be difficult to imagine its absence in such a room as the countryside kitchen. Arrangements assume many elements made of raw wood. So they can be tables with a top made of an untreated wood (then they can be combined with simple, metal elements which will work well with them) or all kinds of trays.

When creating a country-style kitchen, all kinds of plastic should be avoided. This is definitely no place for plastic. Rustic style kitchen furniture must look older than in reality. For this reason, it will be good if the wood is not perfect, but “made more attractive” by cracks, cracks, visible drawing of rings. The walls do not have to be smooth at all. Even abrasions and unevenness, giving the interior a raw character, are preferred.

In a rustic kitchen, you can also use all kinds of checked fabrics or those hand-made for example lace. Flax will also work well, corresponding with other natural materials. Apart from wood, a stone may also appear – white or grey – to look as natural as possible. Think of wickerwork elements as well. Maybe you can use it to make spectacular seats or find fruit baskets using this material? 

Rustic kitchen: accessories

It is difficult to find a larger field to show off than that of rustic kitchen. Arrangements of this place can be very varied, and it all really depends on what specific additions you choose. Contrary to appearances, many of them are perfect for interiors with a typically natural, rural character. You can hang lace curtains in the windows, put a wicker fruit bowl on the table, put dried herbs or flowers in a vase. Embroidered tablecloths and napkins will also prove to be an interesting idea. It is not about complicated, rich ornaments, according to the rule that everything is to be simple and raw.

Of course, you can also introduce small details into the kitchen space, which will perfectly fit into the rural climate. You can hang it somewhere or put it up if there is just a standing piece, an old clock. It wouldn’t hurt to hang a single painting referring with its content to food and nature. Plant lovers can also occupy the windowsill with flowers in ceramic or wooden pots.
